it gave a 65-70 dB reading with only a quiet dishwasher running. the EPA recommends hearing protection at 70dB. i dont think so!

Not even useful.
I like this app but feel that theres room for improvement. With the simple addition of "About Noise" and "Tips", the app would be way more useful. For instance, is 85 decibels a noisy environment? How loud is too loud? And is there an optimal way to position the iPhone to get the most accurate readings (where is the mic anyway)? That said, its an elegant, simple app that Im keeping. Just that it could be even better with more info.
Nice analog display, but I wonder how accurate it is. It NEVER drops below 55 db even in a totally quiet bedroom in the middle of the night.
I use this app in my classroom almost daily. The students love to see how quiet they can be, or at the right time, how loud they can be.
Does what it says on on the tin, for free. No app bloat whatsoever.
As a sound engineer i know when a db meter is being somewhat truthful, this one never goes below 50db...says its 70db while watching tv on moderate volume in my bedroom. You get what you pay for.
It measures sound quite well As for the negative comments ie the dishwasher is not 70 db. Yes it probably is. If you look at manufacturers specs for dishwashers the "whisper quiet models" run around 50 db. Good app
I agree that this program isnt too accurate given that it doesnt drop below 50dB. But I used this program to measure a loud fan in my lab at 85 dB and used the measurement to file a complaint. The occupational health and safety inspector brought in a professional noise meter and measured the same exact value. Conclusion: the program works but only in noisy environments.
Reasonably accurate in the 80-100 dB range, great free app! No bloatware either.
Works good and its simple.
At first it was working fine, but NOW, it says that a totally silent room is 50 decibels and it wont go above 100 (even in a concert!), and its not accurate anywhere in between. I have an iPod touch 4.1 so if you have that then I would avoid this app because it will just... not work.
Just installed this app , very cool and handy when your a construction worker ... Over 85 Db = hearing protection .... Thanks
this app ia good at measuring loud sound levels. anything below 70db and it shows too high. i recommend something else if you need accurate readings.
Works as advertised. One person was talking about using this on an iPod touch, obviously using the headphones or an external mic, that is not as sensitive as the mic on an iPhone. I have compared it with an actual meter and it is pretty accurate.
This app works well even on quiet rooms. I got just under 40 dB in a bedroom and was impressed to see the reaction from distant traffic and nearby birds. Loud noise did produce over 115 dB so it seems to work well in my iPhone 4 even with Mophie case on or off. Now I would like to see a savable graph added for permanent readings.

Vs. A real calibrated spl meter this app is off by 33 dB.
but this app didnt work.
Easy to use. Nice display
